Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL announced with Snapdragon 835 processor, improved cameras: Specifications & Price

After months of waiting and dozens of rumours, Google has finally unveiled its new smartphones: Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. Both smartphones come with faster processors, a newer version of Android out of the box, improved rear-facing cameras, dust and water resistance, and Active Edge sides. Let’s see what each of them offers.

Both, the Google Pixel 2 and the Google Pixel 2, run Android 8.1 Oreo (first phones to come with Android 8.1) with Google UI. Yes, the company is calling its software customisations for Pixel phones as Google UI. Google is also promising platform and security updates to both these smartphones for three years. The phones are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB RAM. They will be available in 64GB and 128GB storage variants. They’re also IP67 certified for dust and water resistance. For improved multimedia experience, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL come with front-facing stereo speakers. Both phones also come with Active Edge, a way to summon Google Assistant by just squeezing the phone’s body.

While the Pixel 2 features a 5-inch 1080p screen, similar to its predecessor, the Pixel 2 XL comes with a 6-inch QHD+ screen with minimal bezels surrounding it. Both phones use LG’s P-OLED display panels with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 protection. These screens also cover 100% of the DCI-P3 colour space. They also feature 12.2-megapixel rear-facing cameras with f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilisation (OIS), and electronic image stabilisation (EIS). The camera can also record 4K videos at 30 frames per second and 1080p slow-motion videos at 120 frames per second. The front-facing camera on both these phones have a resolution of 8 megapixels, an individual pixel size of 1.4µm, f/2.4 aperture, and 1080p video recording. The company has improved its HDR+ algorithm for even better images and videos.

The company is claiming that the fingerprint reader on its new phones is the fastest ever in any smartphone. In terms of connectivity, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL feature an eSIM, so you don’t have to change a SIM card to switch to other cellular network operator. Apart from regular connectivity features like 4G LTE, dual-band gigabit Wi-Fi, GPS, and USB Type-C port, the new phones feature Bluetooth 5.0. However, they lack 3.5mm audio port, so you’ll have to make do with Bluetooth earphones or USB Type-C-based earphones. We do not like this increasing phenomenon of brands ditching 3.5mm audio ports and moving forcing consumers to wireless earphones or USB Type-C-based earphones. Google is bundling a USB Type-C to 3.5mm audio port adapter in the box with both the phones. The Pixel 2 comes packed with a 2,700mAh battery, while the Pixel 2 XL uses a 3,520mAh battery, and they’ll be capable of 18W rapid charging using USB-PD chargers.
