MWC 2017: Samsung’s new Gear VR comes with a wireless controller

Samsung’s Gear VR is the best-selling premium mobile virtual reality headset in the world. The company has released three Gear VRs till now, and the company has now revealed one more: Samsung Gear VR with Controller. The new Gear VR comes with a wireless controller, and it has been designed in collaboration with Oculus. Samsung claims that the new wireless controller for the Gear VR “expands Samsung’s VR ecosystem and makes it easier for consumers to enjoy Gear VR experiences.

The Samsung Gear VR with Controller features two 42mm lenses with a Field of View of 101 degrees and Oculus’ advanced distortion correction technology. It is compatible with the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy S6 edge, and the Galaxy S6. The headset features an accelerometer, a gyrometer, and a proximity sensor to track head movements. The wireless controller connects to the smartphone using Bluetooth, and it features a clickable touchpad, navigation buttons, volume keys, and a trigger button.

The wireless controller is powered by a AAA battery (1,000mAh), and Samsung says that it should last 40 days when with an average daily use time of 2 hours. The touchpad supports various types of actions such as drag and drop, pointing, tilting, and shooting. The home button and the back button makes it easier to navigate around the Gear VR’s user interface as well as apps and games. The trigger button is particularly helpful in playing VR games. It also has a wrist strap that makes sure that the controller stays in your hands even during the most active movements of your gameplay.

The Samsung Gear VR with Controller comes with USB converter in the box, so you can use it with phones that feature either a microUSB port or a USB Type-C port. Hence, that automatically makes it compatible with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus. The Samsung Gear VR with Controller is priced at €99.99 (around ₹7,087), while the Controller can be purchased for  €39.99 (around ₹2,834). They will be available for purchase sometime in Q2 2017, probably along with the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus.
