Rumor: HMD to launch the Nokia 2, 7 and 9 smartphones early next year

A few recent rumors had suggested that HMD Global would launch the entry-level Nokia 2 Android smartphone very soon, alongside a more expensive model. However, a new rumor out of the Philippines suggests HMD Global will be announcing the Nokia 2 only in early 2018, along with the Nokia 7 mid-range and Nokia 9 flagship smartphone. The info comes from an alleged employee of a BPO company that handles logistics for HMD Global.

If the info is indeed accurate, it is likely that all three smartphones will be unveiled at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona next year. At this year’s Mobile World Congress, HMD Global announced the international Nokia 6 variant, Nokia 3, and Nokia 5 smartphones.

The Nokia 2 is expected to sport a 5-inch display with 720 x 1280 HD resolution and could be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 quad-core SoC under the hood. Its main USP will be a large 4000mAh capacity battery, which should allow it to deliver impressive battery stamina.

Most of us were expecting the Nokia 9 to be positioned above the Nokia 8 as HMD Global’s true flagship smartphone. But if the handset is indeed releasing next year, it will likely feature updated internals that would make it a rival to smartphones such as the Galaxy S9, making it a successor to the Nokia 8.

As for the Nokia 7, we expect it to be a mid-range smartphone that would fill the huge gap between the Nokia 6 and Nokia 8. Since India is one of the most important markets for Nokia, we expect all three smartphones to arrive in India soon after the official unveiling. But of course, there is still a possibility of the Nokia 2 and perhaps the Nokia 9 going official before the end of the year. Leakster Roland Quandt had tweeted last month that HMD Global will be launching two new smartphones before the end of the year. While the BPO employee doesn’t have a proven track record, Quandt has been pretty accurate with leaks in the past.
